Hugh Maaskant route

Rotterdam Routes, together with Michelle Provoost, created a new walking route entirely devoted to architect Hugh Maaskant. This route takes you along some of the most famous Rotterdam buildings, including Het Groot Handelsgebouw, Industriegebouw and the Hilton. Now you can get to know the architecture of Maaskant and its influence on Rotterdam.

“I am the greatest architect in the Netherlands”. That was what Hugh Maaskant, born and bred from Rotterdam, could say a bit mockingly about himself. Everything about him was great. It was therefore no less than 2 meters and 2 centimeters long. His hands were one and a half times larger than others’ and when asked for a fire he pulled a marble table lighter from his pocket. Scaling up was also the key concept in his architecture. Maaskant has left a decisive mark on the city with a combination of artistic talent, a sense of drama and business during the reconstruction of Rotterdam.
