“Jazz! For the first time in the Netherlands!” says a Rotterdam theatre poster of 1919. Rotterdam was a pioneering city during the early days of jazz. New musical influences and American artistes arrived first in the Port of Rotterdam. Legendary dance halls brought the city centre to life. But with the North Sea Jazz Festival and jazz venues like LantarenVenster and BIRD, jazz is still alive and well in Rotterdam.
